Rodney Stuckey
The Pistons used their # 15 pick in the draft for Eastern Washington combo guard Rodney Stuckey. The Pistons were very high on Stuckey and before he was chosen Rodney made it quit clear that he wanted to be a Piston. Joe Dumars wasn't even sure that he would still be available when it came time for them to make their pick.Here is a little info on Rodney from NBA Draft Net.
Strengths: Tremendous scorer with excellent body strength... Has the ability to play both guard positions, with solid ball handling and passing ability... Very good at driving to the basket and creating scores... Has a solid mid range game with a good pull up shot off the dribble... Showed the ability to create offense for himself even with opposing defenses keying on him with 2-3 defenders... Solid 3 point shooter at 37%, hitting 55 on the season... On top of great offensive skills, he has the ability to lock down opponents defensively... Averaged close to 50% FG and 4 APG despite a weak supporting cast...If you want to see a little of what Rodney can do Justin Rogers over at MLive has a some video on him.
Weaknesses: A bit of a tweener at 6-3 as he's better at the 2-guard position, but showed the ability to run the point as a freshman... Dominated lesser competition, so it's tougher to gauge his abilities as the level of talent in the Big Sky Conference is inferior ... Needs to show better focus on the defensive end of the floor at all times, as he is extremely effective when he gives full effort... He is a tremendous 1-1 talent, but prove he has the ability to involve teammates... A solid though not overwhelming level of athlete... Could struggle to get shots off the same way on the NBA level as he's small and lacks freakish athleticism...
Notes: Averaged 24.2 ppg as a freshman (9th in the country)... The leading scorer among returning players to NCAA basketball... Never scored less than 14 pts all season...
I for one like the pick, although I was hoping that Nick Young of USC (who went #16, but Stuckey was the guy the Pistons wanted. It's nice that Rodney can play both the 1 and the 2 and from what I can tell he has that Pistons mentality. Let me know what you think in the comments.

Nick Young went to the Wizards at pick number 16, not the 14th pick.

Joe D in the Free Press stated that in the playoffs it has been the backcourt that has let us down. About time!!!! Last year big shot let old glove and white chocolate school him when most of us felt like he should have abused the matchups and went Kobe on them. Well this year wasn't any different. I hope these new guards, if they stay anyway, let it be known they want to take away starters jobs and really push for minutes. I have to believe Joe D picked the best guards available and a log jam can only be good. Now it is up to flip and big shot. I would like to see entire roster get 20 min game, that still gets us 50+ wins and team unity that will hopefully payoff once big shot gets his. fingers crossed, unleash the HOUNDS!!!
This is gunna be another Rodney White pick.......some guy who dominates smaller schools and comes from a no where college.
Afflalo is said to be a Rip Hamilton clone which could be a very good thing. And I hope Stuckey has that chip on this shoulder to prove everyone wrong about his abilities.
We in NYC gave away the Franchise and picked up the Jail Blazer, I wonder what the odds are in Vegas for how many altercations Zach Randolph will get into with the NYC police.
I think all of the guard picks make sense.
3 or 4 years from now we'll have Amir Johnson, Maxiell, and hopefully Cheikh Samb to fill in for Sheed, McDyess, and Webber. Before the draft, though, we didn't have any guards who could step in a few years down the road when Rip and Chauncey (assuming he resigns) aren't good enough to start.
i agree with what paul said. Our bench before the draft didn't really have any truly worthy replacements for Rip and Chauncey. We cannot always depend on our backcourt 100% all the time. So its nice to know there's someone (maybe Rodney) who can come in for Chauncey as point guard in the 3rd quarter or something.
As for Rip, I feel like there's really nobody that can serve as his replacement, because he's always so energetic and gives his all. But I could be wrong because I don't know what these new draft guys can do. I hope we develop a solid bench this offseason so that when our starters rest, our bench can finish the job.
I hope that Rodney has a chip on his shoulder...He looks like a nice guy though :)

arron afflalo is supposed to be a rip hamilton/dwyane wade-type player. he wears no.3 like flash-- hopefully he'll be successful, especially in da pistons
I think Dumars has something up his sleeve. The Pistons now have, what, eight guards on the roster? I think somebody is going to be onthe move, whether it;s Rip, Billups, Murray - I don't know. But I don't see any way the Pistons go into August with eight guys in the backcourt.

Yo fuck a Nick Young. How many forwards do we already have? We put too much emphasis on this draft thing anyways. After the first 3-4 picks every year, the rest is a crapshoot. What, we got Jason Maxiell in the late second round one year? No need to get all pissey about the draft when the players have yet to step on the court.
The Afflalo pick left me scratching my head.
I thought Stuckey was suppose to be a dwayne wade type of player... and affalo someone who can guard but not atlethic players so hes gonna get burnt by dwade melo and lebron.. i really thought we should of picked a small forward
Detroit Pistons -- Like Charlotte, the Pistons landed some quality players in Rodney Stuckey, Arron Afflalo and second-rounder Sammy Mejia. But spending first-round picks on two guys who basically play the same position as Rip Hamilton is excessive, not to mention the versatile Mejia also plays the two. Unless the Pistons consider Stuckey to be primarily a point guard (which he is really isn't) or Mejia to be a small forward, the team now has a glut of talent at the two (don't forget Flip Murray) but still has only free agent Chauncey Billups and might-retire Lindsey Hunter at the point.

Regarding concerns over the Pistons not having a PG behind Chauncey...
Flip was signed as a PG and if I remember correctly he didn't do too badly when Chauncey got injured. He was inconsistent and I still think that we'll move him, though.
Reading some of the things that Joe D has said after the draft, it sounds like they're convinced that Stuckey can legitimately play PG. Didn't Wade enter the league as a PG?
I think that the Joe D may be about to pull a big whammy, what's the deal with all the guards that was selected, I thought the we were suppossed to be looking for a center as well, who is going to plsy the center next season, C-Webb, I love him dearly but I think that he would be better coming in off the bench for about 10 to 15 mintues a quarter, we could use his 10 to 12 pts every game, the guard picks are making me nervous, where are you going to put all of those guards, Chauncey and Rip do need mor e help, but wha about the third pick, I think it should have been a Big Man in the middle who can really play, July 1st is coming up, what is gonna happen? Oh my God, not Chauncey and Rip!!

Jason Maxiell was our first round pick buddy, so you need to chill out first of all. Second of all, whats with the hate on the draft? Rodney Stuckey is the PERFECT fit for us. Hes a very good scorer, could potentially turn into a star, but could also be absolutley nothing.

I think some ppl should check out this site it's a 2008 mock draft I know it's a bit early to be worrying about '08 but it's good for people (like me) who don't follow NCAAB and would like to learn some of the big name people so you can actually know who is good and who is not it also let's you know who they are most like and their strengths and weaknesses it also includes this years draft and last years draft among other things.

Actually Al Thornton was takin in the 14th pick a player that I wanted to have on our squad he's an explosive defender and post player he wouldve been a great addition to the team Stuckey looks good but I would have loved to have this guy on the team

My bad, I was confusing Nick Young with that white boy Nick Fazekas. I'm not saying this is a bad draft for the Pistons, I'm saying that experts and fans get their panties in a bunch over draft picks. That's why I hate trading players for draft picks rather than for other established players. Because someone can be a non-flashy average player and remain in the NBA for years, look at P.J. Brown. People still won't let Dumars hear the end of drafting Darko a couple years ago. What I'm saying is the draft is a crapshoot, and no more than an educated gamble like the tables in Vegas.

Joe has drafted three guards, but I don't think Meija will be signed. Stuckey can play at 1 and 2, Affalo can play at 2 and 3.
My new idea for the offseason :
1. RE-SIGN Billups and Johnson
2. SIGN rookies Stuckey and Affalo
3. SIGN a veteran SF/SG (like Grant Hill or Morris Peterson)
4. TRADE Mohammed and Murray :
- Can we send them with the two second round picks of the Raptors for Greg Oden ? Too hard I think.
- Most simply, we can send them to a young center like LaMarcus Aldridge...
7. LOOK AT Cheick Samb this summer, who might do something for us next season...
6. DON'T RE-SIGN Webber and Davis
7. FOR A 15th PLAYER, I'd love to keep Blalock here, and like last season, send him to a NBDL team...

a brief (hopefully helpful) rundown from an avid college basketball fan:
Both first rounders are shooting guards and although their games are different they both fit the Detroit mold of big, strong guards who can overpower opposing backcourts. Stuckey can shoot the ball, but he's more of a slasher/power guard. His 1st step isn't amazing, but he can get into the lane off of his handle, craftiness/moves, and strength, which can also be used to post up on smaller defenders. He's not a PG, not even a score-first point really, more of a combo guard who can pass pretty well (Ben Gordon w/much better size?) isn't really cut for running an offense; he has the potential to be a dynamic scorer.
Afflalo's not a poor man's Rip. Rip is a poor man's Reggie Miller, which still makes him a fabulous offensive player. Afflalo could develop into a lockdown defender and he's unafraid mix it up and play rough. While I doubt he's going to be more than adequate on the offensive end in the NBA, I can see him as a somewhat more-offensive minded Raja Bell, which is still a very nice piece to have.
Sammy Mejia could be the next Reece Gaines, which sounds terrible until you remember that Gaines was selected 15th. You could do much worse (like a plodding Euro stiff) at 57 than taking a flier on a 6-7 dude with a PG skillset.
I have to think a trade or two's in the offing, esp. if Joe can't resign Chauncey. Even if Mejia doesn't make the team or gets stashed in Europe that's still way too many guards on next year's roster. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
