Delfino Traded for draft picks

The Pistons made their first move of the off-season Friday, shipping Carlos Delfino to Toronto in exchange for second-round picks in the 2009 and 2011 NBA drafts.

The move clears almost $2 million in room under the NBA's salary cap and would appear to make it even more likely that the Pistons will have a roster spot available for Alex Acker, a 2005 second-round draft choice who spent last season in Greece after playing his rookie year with the Pistons.

There is also a very good possibility that the Pistons will draft a perimeter player with the 15th pick of the June 28 draft, given the way the draft is shaping up. Among the possibilities there are small forwards Al Thornton of Florida State and Thaddeus Young of Georgia Tech, shooting guard Nick Young of Southern Cal and combo guard Rodney Stuckey of Eastern Washington - all players who would have competed with Delfino for playing time.

"We appreciate everything Carlos did for us while he was here," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said, "and we wish him all the best with Toronto." Via Pistons.com

How can someone not like Los? i loved it when he slammed it home ill really miss him well not that much in canada you get to see plenty of them raptors more and more it looks like we are getting ready to blow up the team but im sure it will happen in 2 or 3 years and its good to know we have plenty of good young players and picks.

Man, I'm kinda sadden at the fact that he is leaving. I'm gonna miss him. Even though he stunk sometimes he did hit some good 3's to either get us back in the game or give us an advantage. I'm gonna miss you Carlos. Why didn't they trade him when he was talking smack about not getting PT?

I agree... and for 2 lousy 2nd round picks, he's worth more.

They didnt trade him because.. First who would we replace him with? joe d didnt feel alex acker was ready and we had the 60th pick last year so there was really nobody to replace him and 2 probably had to see if he would produce when we gave him more time but thats self explanatory cuz he got traded.. we could of gotten more from the raptors if he had developed some kind consistency..

He was growing on me this year because he wasn't as selfish... but he still screwed up a lot. I trust Joe D though. However, I will miss calling him Delfonzo, which became his nickname when one of my friends called him that on accident.

Whether we'll miss Delfino or not, well that's just crying over spilled milk. The point is, Joe D is thinking ahead too. At least he didn't trade for yet another veteran for short-term purposes. This leaves Detroit with multiple draft picks in the future, thus ensuring we'll always have ways to reload. Again, if you heard the interview, Dumars is not going to let another meltdown like in 1991 happen. One way to do so is by securing draft picks. Also, if Alex Acker is a good as advertised and with the possibility of bringing the Samb kid from Spain, there's gotta be room for them on the roster. And the salary cap room will be useful in resigning key players... not a bad move when you look at the larger picture.

we should get more 1st draft picks thats stupid we gave away talent for almost nothing. Carlos was good in the regular season, but he was HORRIBLE in the playoffs.

good luck to him, and when he comes to the palace next season wearing a raps' jersey, lets cheer for him =]

Man that's a surprise, I really liked him. I know he didn't produce in the playoffs but he was never really sure what to do, this was his first time playing in the playoffs. I wish him the best and can't wait for him to come back with the Raptors, but seriously? two SECOND ROUND draft picks? that's an insult.

He was my favorite player on the team, you would just wait to see what he would do every game. Sometimes not much, other times gold, Emeka Okafor can testify to that. Not to worry as long as I still have Antonio McDyess.

I don't think that was the best thing to do.If Dumars makes anymore dumb trades like that he might make the Pistons worse than making them any better.Delfino was a ok player but to SECOND round draft picks years from now is what they get for him thats kind of stupid.

10:12 PM, June 15, 2007
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Its not that bad of a move face it delfino isnt consistent and is not gonna turn out like ginobili he has to be a ballhog like kobe to get points you never know if those draft picks might come handy. its obvious he likes alex acker talent more than delfino's.. before saying that was a dumb trade try doin his job and say you could of gotten a better deal.

I couldn't stand the guy until this year. This year he got aggressive, and I thought, played very well. I will miss him too. He grew on me.

Let's hope that added money helps us to keep the Chauncey and Webber. I would hate to see either of them go.

11:08 PM, June 15, 2007
Blogger Bigdee36 said...

I seen some of the videos on you-tube and I think he can make an impact on this team and give us some youth and athletisism. Delfino had flashes of goodness but he wasn't very consistant. I liked him but he had to go.

11:22 PM, June 15, 2007
Blogger Gilliss said...

I'm not convinced at all by those videos of Acker. They show him getting blocked and pulling crazy moves that would never work in the NBA.

However, if I'm wrong and we see TWO second rounders (Acker and Amir) take off (because I already think Amir will), then maybe the trade was pure genius! Maybe Joe D is the master of the late draft and fool of the first round.

But 'Fino was such a sexy Argentine! I'll miss his shiny hair, confused expression, and most of all, those thumbs! (You know, the ones he'd have sticking out of clenched fists as he ran backwards down the court after making a basket.) The 'Dos 'Los is now the No 'Los and that makes me muy triste.

Luckily we have so much sexiness on the team that the Georgious Quotient is still the highest in the league and we all know that's all that really matters. :)

'Fino, you'll always be the #1 Carlos in my heart. GOOD LUCK IN CANADA!

I thought that Carlos Delfino should be traded because he wasn't really clicking with the pistons offense. Yeah, he did a couple good things but he also cost us a lot of games too. I remember that foul he committed at the 3point line at the last few seconds in the regular season and same situation took place again.

I think hes a great player but in order for him to be as great as he is he needs to play with a team that can afford to take the risk and play him out there longer. This way he might become another GINOBLI! HOPEFULLY!

good luck to DELF

Carlos will be something someday, he never really got the chance here to do what he can. He was used just as a role player... off the bench, and never had any plays called for him. So i think it was hard for him to get the opportunities to show that he could be consistantly good. He never got enough playing time. he's a good defender and has a range of skills offensively as well. So none the less i'm pissed that he's gone and that we didnt get anyone in return. however, i'm happy that he'll get a chance to prove himself, and i'm hopefull JoeD knows what he's doing, so i think everything will turn out for the best.

That's really sad that before he really started geting minutes he was traded. We lost another three point shooter. Why can't we keep our team together? First Big Ben now him. I'll die if they get rid of Sheed or M.R Bigshot.

Seriously, I never imagined myself going to bat for Carlos, but this year... man he did some good things for this team. He really did have a nose for the ball. I would rather have seen Flip Murray go. (#1 because he is a ball hog and #2 because he came from Cleveland... we all hate them now don't we?) Yeah he screwed up a lot, but I do think he will be somebody someday, and I hope we don't end up regretting this move. I am sure in the future (when we play Toronto) I will be wishing he was still one of ours... damn, why couldn't it have been Murray?? Still don't care for ole Flip. (Maybe it's the name.) Oh well, as long as we get the core four back, I'll get over him happily.

Just needed to vent, does anyone brsides me think drew sharp is on some smoke? He'll say one thing and then come back a week later with a complete 180.Negative people drive me crazy life is to damn short for that!

I for one will miss carlos, don't feel he was properly handled here. L.B. was not good with young players. Our coaching choices have'nt been the greatest and I believe MR. Davidsons concentration on not paying a luxury tax broke up our 04 team. I believe we could have gotten a second tittle otherwise.

Yes J.D. has made some bad choices but he must work within Davidsons paramaters. If you want quality you have to be willing to pay for it!

Sorry but LB isn't coming back. Also I am pretty sure that these draft picks are going to be traded this summer. I doubt Joe D is that worried about the second round a couple years down the road. Other teams could find those picks valuable and with a player thrown in may trade a very good player. Go Stons!

Breaking News:
And the countdown begins: Carlos Delfino the first to be traded, to the Toronto Rapters for 2 second round draft picks 2009 and 2011.
WHO WILL BE NEXT?! DA DA DAAAAAAA!!

I wonder why so low. Anyway I liked Delfino with his slick back, John Travolta shiny hair style, his sauve swagger, and his cute accent lol. Even though he did play all 82 games without alot of minutes, and at crucial moments he pulled through, and at times slacked, he was still apart of the Detroit family and it will be sad not to see him in a uniform next year. I wish him the best of luck with his new team in Toronto and that he gets enough minutes and becomes a star.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE REMAINING DETROIT PISTONS?

Now on to the players that are still here. I hope THEY ARE STILL HERE by the time the season starts. I am happy that Jay Maxx, Acker, and Johnson will be getting playing minutes and showcasing their skills very soon. We do need fresh meat and young atheliticism from these guys to shake and bake the other teams. Now with that said this in turn will help out our veteran players, when they get tired put in the youngsters, and rest the starters up. Also people are getting used to the way the Pistons have been playing and yadayada, so with the newbies they can switch it up and bring
